Chances are that they didn’t and intend to go back to bed after they have eaten to crash again until a much later time.

Let’s face it—do you REALLY want people knocking on your door trying to get into the wrong room (on accident, of course) or to have to hide your head under your pillow in an attempt to not hear the loud pounding music that easily permeates the walls? I often wonder how daunting a task it must be to find the right vacation rental.
Most people considering a vacation rental for the extra space and many amenities don’t want to end up with a home that falls way short of what was promised to them upon booking. An unclean home with a leaky roof is not a good start to a much needed vacation. They are many wonderful rental homes out there with owners like me who take pride of their homes and provide a great rental experience for their guests. After all we want you to come back again. Check out these tips before you make your choice.

1.Referral: Start by asking people you know if they have had a positive experience with a rental in the area you’re planning to stay on vacation. Word of mouth is by far the best resource.

2.Licensed and Regulated: A home used for short term rentals should be licensed and regulated by the state and county. The property should register as such with the state and an annual hotel license obtained. The license and sales tax number should be displayed in the home or management office. Safety equipment such as approved fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are necessary.

3.Rental Websites: These are sites where property owners list their homes. There are plenty to choose from. Sites like vacationhomerentals.com, vacationrentals.com and Flipkey.com let you sort listings by location, price, number of bedrooms and other amenities. Homeowners on these sites provide very detailed descriptions of their rentals along with pictures and availability. You should compare a few homes and contact owners to make sure their calendars are up to date.

4.Getting specific: This is the time to get answers to questions you may have about the property. Ask about everything from sleeping arrangements and kitchen essentials. Where is the nearest grocery store? What happens in case of an emergency? Who do I call? Owners should get back to you within 48 hrs by responding to your inquiry via email or by phone. If they don’t move on!!

5.Check reviews and references from prior guests. Most owners provide a link to their guest reviews. Read these and see what others have said about the property.

6.Get it in writing. Once you’ve made your choice you should get a detailed rental agreement that spells out payment and responsibilities of both the renter and owner.

7.Payment: Most owners accept a small deposit or a percentage of the total rental fee to reserve dates with the final balance due before arrival. Never wire money directly to an owner. Many owners now accept credit cards and PayPal.

9.Consider travel insurance because vacation rentals have strict cancellation policies and most don’t allow refunds within 30 to 60 days of arrival.

Summer in My Orlando Vacation Rental

Its been awhile since I last blogged but I have been busy getting the Palms at Lake Davenport Estates ready for the 2009 summer rental season. There are still plenty of good dates available and our rental rates are still the best in the area for a four-bedroom close to Disney and all the Orlando theme parks. I know that due to the economy alot of families have put off going on vacation this summer but I think that you get your best bang for the dollar when visiting Orlando and staying in a vacation rental. First, Orlando is still the best family oriented travel city in the country.

What not to pack

With most of the major airlines now charging additional fees for checked in baggage the big goal these days is to pack as little as possible so you can carry on your bag. I for one have always had a problem with packing light since I pack like I'm not coming back!! I learned my lesson last week while traveling to Puerto Rico for a much needed vacation. When they weighed my luggage it was 53lbs which is over the 50lb limit allowed by Jet Blue Airlines. The extra 3lbs cost me an additional $50 bucks!! So this means I have to do more with less clothes. Here are a few tips for a short weekend trip:

The Big Rule: Nothing gets packed unless it goes with at least two other pieces. In fact, be careful when you buy something that only goes with one thing. You get stuck".

Commit to neutrals on half the body: Let's do neutral bottoms. We're going to bring one pair of jeans, one shirt and one pair of trousers or one skirt. A cotton or poly jersey dress, like a wrap dress is great for traveling. Gray is the easiest neutral to make work for day and evening. Brown is OK, but it can end up being too casual, especially for men.

Darker jeans are better: They can be dressed up for dinner. Straight-leg jeans are preferable to wide-leg ones, for the same reason.

The other half gets patterns: Choose a shirt or blouse with a pattern that goes well with your neutral bottom.

Keep secondary colors consistent: Throw in a pink top and one knit sweater because it will go well with both jeans and trousers. The fewer colors you have, the more likely it is that different patterns will work.

Accessorize strategically: The right shoes and jewelry can take an outfit up or down. It's fine to mix gold and silver, but when you're traveling, it's easier to stick to one.

On actual packing: Wear bulkier items on the plane, so you have more space inside the suitcase.Put jewelry in Ziploc bags to protect it, then stuff the bags inside the shoes. Next pack the shoes in shoe bags, in the bottom of the suitcase. Don't forget to take the required small containers for your toiletries.

Doing Disney the Right Way!!

Going to Disney World can be an adventure within itself even before you get inside the park.

For a first timer this can be a little overwhelming. Where to park, confusion about pricing, long lines, where to start and what to see first are all the topics of the day long before having fun in one of the world's greatest theme parks. Here are a few tips to help you get started and make your trip to Disney World a little less scary:

Disney World is a theme park within a theme park. It comprises 4 major theme parks; Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney-MGM Studios, Disney's Animal Kingdom Park. It has 2 water parks; Blizzard Beach Water Park and Typhoon Lagoon Water Park. Plus Downtown Disney, Disney Quest, and Wide World of Sports. Unfortunately for us, we have to pay to see all of them except for Downtown Disney which is free.

The Price of a 1 Day Adult (ages 10+) park pass is $71.36 Child (ages 3-9) $59.64 at the gate. This ticket includes admission to all 4 Walt Disney World Theme Parks mentioned above and expire 14-days after the first use. They do not include admission to the water parks, Pleasure Island, Disney Quest or Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. This ticket allows you to see only one park per day, there is no park hopping with this ticket.

Park Hopper Option: Adult (ages 10+) $119.28 Child (ages 3-9) $107.57 at the gate.
Adding the Park-Hopper option lets you come and go as you please through all four Walt Disney World theme parks on the same day or everyday of your pass. You can also add-on additional parks to the hopper pass. For example you could do the 4 theme parks plus the water parks for an additional $50 from the base price listed above. You can buy the tickets in 2 day, 3 day or 10 day options.

Parking at Disney: When driving to Disney World and visiting the theme parks you can expect to pay the following Disney World parking fees:$10-Cars $11 Camper/Trailers $14 Bus/Tractor Trailer

With the exception of the Magic Kingdom, all of the Disney World parking is outside the main entrance to the theme park. At the Magic Kingdom, the lot is located at the Ticket and Transportation Center. Once you park here, you will need to take either the Monorail or the Ferry to the Magic Kingdom. The Disney World parking lots are HUGE!! Thank goodness your not expected to start your park visit with a marathon run to the entrance. There are trams that are constantly in use to get you from the lot to the entrance. Don't forget to pay close attention to where you parked. You don't want to end your day by wandering thru a parking lot among a sea of cars that look exactly like yours. (This is especially "fun" if you rented a car and can barely remember anything other than what color it is.) If you still forget the section where you parked(even though you asked everyone in your party to please remember) don't panic, just let the tram driver know the approximate time that you arrived and based on that info they should be able to direct you to the section that you are in.

Water Parks:There is no fee when parking at the water parks, but there's also no parking tram. Be prepared to walk if you arrive later and get a spot that's further out.

Downtown Disney:There is no fee when parking at the Marketplace, West Side or Pleasure Island. (Note that there are no shuttles to the theme parks from this location.)

Even though you may be tempted to walk right off the flight and go right to Disney World, DON'T!! You'd be foolish to waste a great opportunity to experience the fun but dramatic tension that ensues when you're this close to the park, but can't get in due to long lines, you can't find a good parking spot plus your tired from the traveling. My suggestion is to check-in to your lodging (hopefully it's my home) relax for a few and head out to Downtown Disney first.
Downtown Disney is the resorts premiere shopping area with a unique collection of stores and eateries. Do a little walking around, do some pre-Disney mania immersion at the World of Disney store. You could also catch a movie at the AMC theatres and let the kids play video games at the ESPN Zone or dinner at the Rainforest Cafe. Let yourself get familiar with the park and then set out the next day for your theme parks adventure. Instead of waiting on line to buy your tickets, I use the Official Ticket Center, their prices are fantastic and they will deliver them to your home or wherever you're staying.

Load up on Fastpasses: The Fastpass concept is to "save your spot on line" so that you can do other things (i.e., eat, shop, go to the restroom) instead of waiting on an endless line. If you learn to use this system to your advantage, you'll maximize your amusement time.

The most important thing to remember is to have FUN!! Disney World is a huge theme park and no matter how hard you try it's nearly impossible to see everything unless you plan to vacation there for a month. Take your time, relax, it's not going anywhere. One of the things I love about Disney World is that everytime I go I see something that I had not seen before. So the more you go the more you'll know and soon you'll be a Disney expert like me.

Summer in Orlando

Well we are in the full summer season at my Florida home and thankfully it has been a good one. My home is nearly full for the summer with just a few days in August still available. So it's not too late to pack your bags and get down to some of that great Florida Fun.

While traveling on vacation with the kids I've discovered that the Apple iPod is definitely an item you don't want to leave home without!! In today's high tech world of computers, cell phones and digital cameras the Apple iPods are with out a doubt one of the best must have travel accessory.
Coming from a generation that thought it would all end with the eight-track player, I had no idea until recently when my children set me straight, all the things this small gadget could do.
So now whenever we go away we are still able to take our favorite music, videos and photos.
Here are some of the ways to get the most out of your iPod:

Connect iPod to your stereo
You don't have to buy expensive speakers. Instead connect your iPod to your entertainment center. All you need is an iPod specific cable which iPod or may other manufacturers are making.
One end plugs into the mini plug on your iPod and the other end into your receiver. Don not plug the iPod into the phone jacks; they're too sensitive and your stereo could be damaged. If need be, use a cable with mini plugs on both ends. Just make sure it's a stereo cable. These have two black bands on the metal tip. There are also special cables and docks for video and photo iPods. These connect your iPod to your television but before you buy them make sure your TV has a compatible connection.

Control iPod with remote
Once you connect your iPod to your entertainment center you'll want a remote so you won't need to get up to change the tunes. Apple's remote($29) works with iPod docks with an infrared (IR) receiver. Apple's AV Connection Kit ($99) features connection cables, a dock and remote.

Transfer & Store Photos
The newer iPods allow you to transfer photos from your computer or download them directly from your camera. This is handy when traveling. You'll need the iPOd Camera Connector($29). It attaches to the iPod's dock connector and features a USB port for attaching your camera's cable. Remember that not all cameras are compatible with the iPod Camera Connector, so if yours isn't use a USB memory card reader instead. Once attached, the iPod provides the option of importing photos. When you're done simply erase the memory card. You can view the photos on your iPod immediately.

Coming Soon: Apple iPhone
As if all this wasn't enough, Apple announced it newest product the Apple iPhone.
iPhone combines three products- a mobile phone, a widescreen iPod with touch controls and a breakthrough Internet communications device with desktop-class email, web browsing, maps, and searching all in one small, lightweight handheld device.

So next time you get ready to pack your bags for that much needed R&R and have no idea how to fit your Laptop, camera and cell phone in that small carry on bag- Don't forget the iPhone!!

Westchester Airport Upgrades Security System

Westchester County Airport has gone through some great changes in the past few months.
Both JetBlue and AirTrans recently started to provide daily flights from the airport to some of Florida's best cities like Orlando, Ft Lauderdale and W.Palm Beach. Yesterday the Airport unveiled its new 5 Million Dollar airport perimeter security system. Cameras and underground sensors will provide detailed images in the dark and in bad weather giving continous coverage around the 703-acre Westchester County Airport.

Security officers will now be able to spot any unauthorized security breach within seconds, identify it and notify police and airport personal who can respond. This protection doesn't come cheap, the system costs $250,000 a year to run and maintain but are paid by user fees and not the county tax dollars. Since Sept. 11, 2001, spending on airport security has increased from $1.4 million to $7 million annually. The airport now boasts 26 officers and a sergeant who patroll its structure.

Similiar systems are in the process of being installed at La Guardia, JFK, Newark and Teterboro airports. Safety is always a concern when you fly in the post 911 era. It's good to know that the traveling public flying out of the Westchester Airport will have one of the best security systems around.

JetBlue to Launch Florida Flights from Westchester County Airport

Great news for all you Florida bound travelers residing in Westchester County.
Starting March 28 JetBlue will be taking off from Westchester County Airport with one daily flight to Orlando. They will add a second flight to Orlando on April 2 with service to South Florida with one daily flight each to West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale. Over time the airline plans to increase service with 10 daily flights to these Florida cities and branch out to other Florida destinations. Fares start at $99 for Orlando and $79 to W. Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale.

JetBlue already offers 70 flights a day New York to Florida from JFK International and Stewart Airports. This will be a convenient way for many JetBlue customers who live in Westchester County to travel to Florida without the headaches of driving to JFK or LaGuardia airports.

My friends and co-workers are really looking forward to the airline flying out of Westchester.
I always try to fly JetBlue when I go down to my Florida vacation home in Orlando. Their fares are among the lowest and their service is fantastic. The kids love the big roomy leather seats and the TVs behind each one are a great way to keep them occupied for the 2 1/2 hour flight.

For those of you who didn't know AirTran also offers service to four Florida cities and as of March 6 will offer a dozen daily flights to Orlando, W. Palm Beach, Tampa and Fort Myers.
The competition from JetBlue should certainly benefit travelers with low fares to the Sunshine State.

JetBlue to begin Florida Flights From Stewart Airport

Great news for Florida-bound travelers in the Hudson Valley. JetBlue annouced that it will start service to Florida from Stewart International Airport on December 19 2006. This is great news for the Hudson Valley as it means that we no longer have the dilema of facing several hours of drive time to fly out of Kennedy, La Guardia or Newark. They will be two flights daily: one to Fort Lauderdale and one to Orlando. In January they plan on adding West Palm Beach to their schedule as well. So start packing your bags Hudson Valley, Florida has never looked so good!
